How You Can Enjoy Soccer With Just a Few Friends
By: Patrick Omari
Any English boy that grew up at school playing football in the playgrounds at lunch time has surely played more different variations of the game than they can remember. When the lunch time bell went there would be the inevitable rush to lay claim for space on the playing field for an impromptu game of football. Of course, with no referees or goalposts these games would often have to form their own improvised rule set. Even now, years after leaving school, I still enjoy the various football mini-games with some friends. It has developed into its own subculture and language and I'm it sure can seem confusing to newcomers. To Americans looking to play football, or soccer as they call it, the regional variations in small pick-up games may seem a little strange. In truth, these games are played far more than the 11-a-side format played professionally. Small three, five and six-a-side matches are much quicker and easier to play as they don't require so much space and can be played with just a few players. In this article I thought I'd run through some of the different games of football that I've played, with the intent of showing that football can be played with just a few people for fun, and doesn't always have to be that gruelling 90 minute match. Headers and volleys is a casual game that can be played with as little as three players, only requiring one goal. One player plays in goal, and then the rest play outfield. The idea is that the outfield players must score a goal using only a header or a volley. There are far more variations of headers and volleys than I could list but that is the general idea of the game. It is usually a competition between the players and the keeper. In the rules that I typically play if the kicker misses the target or the goalkeeper catches the ball before it bounces then they must switch and the keeper is allowed back out onto the pitch. The game is typically played for fun as a pick up with a few friends. There are variations where players have a set amount of lives, which can be lost by missing the target or being caught by the goalkeeper. Once their lives run out then they have lost. It is a fun game and can be used to practise two particularly difficult skills to execute consistently. Another game that is common to play with just a few people is 'one touch, two bounce'. The object of this game is to keep the ball in the air using just one touch of the ball per player while only allowing the ball to bounce twice between touches. Players are not allowed to touch the ball before it has been kicked by a different player. The game can be played in a HORSE fashion, whereby each player collects a letter should they make a mistake. Once a player collects all the letters then they are out. The winner is the last player left. A mistake is made when a player kicks the ball so that it is impossible for another player to get to it. A fun game and can be played with almost any number of people. If you're feeling more competitive you could try a quick 3v3 game. Usually in a pick-up game of 3v3 small goals will be used and there will be no goalkeeper assigned. It is fast paced and focuses on quick touches and good close control. It can be great fun and again, no formal goalposts are needed, a few jumpers will do. These small games have given rise to the popular phrase, jumpers for goal-posts. This refers to a quick informal game among friends, often using variations on the goalkeeper position such as monkey rush or stick goalkeeper. Monkey rush is where the keeper is allowed to play on pitch like normal but still able to handle the ball around the goal. A stick keeper must stay on his line. These variations are often used to balance teams when there are an uneven number of players, with the numerically superior team having the stick goalkeeper. Hopefully I've shown that playing football does not need to be what you see on television and that it is a really flexible game that is enjoyable with almost any amount of players. So next time you're bored find a ball and some friends and go practise your headers and volleys, you may even notice improvements next time you play a match.

Olympics: China Insists Gymnasts Were Old Enough to Compete
The Chinese deputy sports minister has insisted that all of the women's gymnastic team were old enough to compete
China's deputy sports minister has once more insisted that all the members of the Chinese gold-medal winning women's gymnastics team were old enough to take part in the Olympics. Cui Dalin has blamed the confusion on a paperwork error that occurred when He Xenin, who won two gold medals at the Games but now faces accusations of competing while underage, transferred from a local team to the national team last year. "Last year at the all-city competition, He Kexin moved from one team to another and during the process of registering during the move, there appeared this age discrepancy," Cui said during a news conference. "So it was the appearance of a mistake in the process of transferring teams that the misunderstanding appeared. However, I can right here accurately say that the ages of the members of our gymnastics delegation entirely conform to the requirements for participation in the Beijing Olympic Games." The Chinese government news agency, Xinhua, identified He as a 13-year-old during China's Cities Games last year. Gymnasts must turn 16 during the Olympic year to be eligible for the Games. He was part of the team that beat the United States to take China's first women's team Olympic gold in gymnastics and also won individual gold on the uneven bars. The International Gymnastics federation are currently sifting through paperwork, passports, ID cards and and family residence permits to determine whether the Chines gymnasts have broken the rules. The process has proved slow so far and there is no deadline for the investigation. "The international federation has required the delivery of birth certificates and all the documents like family books, entries in schools and things like that," the IOC president Jacques Rogge said today. "They have received the documents, and at first sight it seems to be OK."

Ireland United - The Way Forward For Irish Football?
By: Patrick Omari
The Premier League format that emerged in England and that was later replicated in Scotland has been a resounding success. In 1992 the top tier of English football broke away from the Football League and has flourished with the backing of Sky TV. Scottish clubs followed suit in 1998 to form the Scottish Premier League (SPL), with Setanta Sports currently providing improved terms to extend their deal.
A sports marketing firm, Platinum One, has unveiled plans for an All-Ireland Premier League. This is an attempt to provide an upturn in the fortunes of the beautiful game in Ireland. Many clubs, on both sides of the border, are struggling to survive due to poor attendances and sponsorship. Recently, Sligo Rovers, Cobh Ramblers and Galway United have all revealed that they are suffering financial difficulties.
Most concerning is the current plight of Sligo Rovers. A club statement warned on July 15th that "It is a matter of fact that if Sligo Rovers Football Club do not raise substantial funds by the end of August 2008 the club will no longer exist in football." This is a town that has previously boasted a passionate football tradition and a strong fan base. But club officials have resorted to admitting that they're struggling to get paying fans through the gates, and if they don't manage to conjure up a small fortune in the next month then Sligo Rovers will cease to exist as a football club.
It is important to consider that the financial problems being experienced by Irish football clubs are not peculiar to Ireland. The high profile demise of Gretna in the Scottish Premier League highlights a more global problem, with at least three clubs from the English leagues on the verge of extinction.
The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) recognises that the financial problems have been brought on by over-ambitious chairmen, who over-extend themselves financially in their bid to bring success to their club. In an attempt to rectify the situation, the FAI have brought in a cap on players' wages, which should not exceed 65 per cent of a club's income. The salary cap could have the potential to restore a more financially stable league, but can the clubs afford to wait a season or two to find that out?
A United Irish League would result in removing the running of domestic football at the top level from the FAI and the Irish Football Association (IFA). The proposals include running the league under a five year license, which would be granted by the FAI and IFA. The league would be funded through sponsorship and television deals. The propose that infrastructure of the clubs could also be improved by unlocking government grants for stadium improvements.
The FAI's chief executive, John Delaney, recently declared that he was in favour of the idea in principle, but he felt it was "divisive" at the current time and said he remained committed to the association's own plan to develop the League of Ireland in its present form. The IFA have refused to enter initial discussions and chief executive, Howard Wells, has stated that the timing would not be right as the IFA was currently revamping its own league.
The plans for a United Irish League were created by Fintan Drury, chairman of Paddy Power and director of Anglo Irish Bank. The league would run alongside the Premier Leagues in England and Scotland and consist of ten clubs- seven from the republic and three from the north. Drury has invited Bohemians, Drogheda United, St. Patrick's Athletic, Galway United, Limerick 37, Cork City and Shamrock Rovers from the republic. Invites have also been issued to Linfield, Glentoran and Derry City from Northern Ireland. Drury sent a 62 page proposal to all the clubs and hopes the league could launch in August next year.
The SPL has the Old Firm derby, and the English Premiership has Sky's Grand Slam Sunday, maybe the Irish United League would offer the traditional north/south rivalry which could capture the public's imagination.

World Cup 2010 : New Horizons for African Football
By: Peter Beckham
Early reports show that even at this early stage, South Africans are more than eager to formally welcome and host the FIFA World Cup 2010. After losing the 2006 bid to Germany, the date of May 15, 2004 marked history when it was announced that it is time for South Africa to be the first ever African country to hold the much revered World Cup series and to be the 16th country to do such.
There will be two main stadiums in Johannesburg to be used for the event. Built in 1987, Soccer City is the venue for the first game. The stadium has a capacity of 94,700 people and is large and majestic enough to act as the springboard for the exciting tournament. Currently, renovations are under way to make sure the stadium is at the best it can be by 2010. Being constructed is an encircling roof while being developed are new changing room facilities and floodlights. The upper tier will also be extended around the stadium.
Another main stadium to be used for the 2010 World Cup is Ellis Park, just a few minutes away from Johannesburg City Center. Built in 1982, Ellis Park is a world class, integrated stadium that offers only state of the art features, facilities and security. The stadium is also being improved to be ready by 2010. Among the current developments under way is the construction of new upper tiers to increase the capacity of 10,149 seats to 60,000.
It must be said that the entrustment of the FIFA World Cup 2010 to South Africa couldn’t have had a more perfect timing, happening in a period where African football is steadily rising in both quantity and quality, especially considering its difficult beginnings. In the early days, football in South Africa has been affected by a harsh system of racial segregation. South Africa’s constitution prohibited racially mixed teams to compete in global tournaments and could only send either all-black or all-white teams.
Meanwhile, the history of football in Africa as a whole has been a deep story that doesn’t involve games alone but a lot of magic, racism, money, and complexity. Football games were not just mere games but also reflected such uneven poverty in Africa through money in the form of income to players. Everything was highly monetized and the system was frowned at by European countries. Nevertheless, the complex system of African football continued to push on and the overall style was often characterized by a showy, individualistic kind of game instead of a team effort.
The recent years showed much evolution in African football, along with the rise and global recognition of African football players like Steven Pienaar and Aaron Mokoena. Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Pienaar is a South African midfielder of the Bafana Bafana (South African Soccer Team) who moved to Germany and the Borussia Dortmund team in 2006. Meanwhile, Mokoena is the captain of Bafana Bafana and was the youngest player ever to play for the team.
One thing’s for sure: regardless of the outcome, the FIFA World Cup 2010 would truly mark another history for the long evolution of football in Africa.

Fantasy Football - Trouncing Your Buddies
By: Chris Campbell
Fantasy football fans will be scouring all the usual suspects for football facts, predictions, myths, legends and lies during the preseason. Not just because football fans are info junkies, but because they plan on trouncing their coworkers, neighbors, and in-laws in the next season of fantasy football leagues. Crazy fools that they are will probably find nothing but reams and reams of statistics. So unless they all received a PHD in statistical analysis during their drunken college years, they really wont be any further ahead then you my dear reader. Becuase, we are not going to be taking statistics here, instead we're unveiling the deepest darkest secrets of winning football fantasy leagues. And you my dear reader will be able to mount a masterful trouncing of all your coworkers, neighbors, and in-laws during the next fantasy football season.
Football Winning Ways
You don't have to be a big time winner in previous football fantasy leagues to win this season. Your about to benefit from the experience of past fantasy football winners right here, and right now. Strategically, tactically, and otherwise, information is knowledge. So if this is your first time at fantasy football, read on, and prepare to exercise your winning ways.
Digging for Distance
Don't just go for the big names in the fantasy football draft. Sure enough the top ten obvious players will go fast and everyone will be looking to get as many of these guys as they can. But that's easy, giving a little more thought and making smart choices with the second and third stringers will really build a football team with depth. That way, when your stars do down, and you can bet at least one of them will, you'll be prepared. Keep on eye out for up and comers, who haven't hit their full potential, or maybe just haven't been given a chance to show their stuff because of stronger players ahead of them. It's smart drafting for depth that separates the men from the boys in this game.
Devilish Little Details
Once the teams are stacked, stay on top of things, and pay attention to the little stuff. A great deep team, like the one you should have picked will be a handful to manage. So many good player to choose from and properly assign. Everybody team matches up differently against other teams, and the same can be said for players. Every player and team has their own strength and weakness. Consider everything. Not just how well a player did last week, but how well a player did, who they played for, what conditions they played under, and how those considerations will factor into this weeks games. Fantasy football, just like real football, is won by playing smart and taking calculated risks when the setting is right.
A Player To Be Named Later
to the table, and see if you can make a good season, a great season. Trading for the coming weeks games, is just as important as trading for the rest of the season. If someone can help you this week, go for it, and dump them later. It's not like your really uprooting the poor Trades are important to. If your team is deep and you've got more good players then you can handle (yea right), then maybe it's time to bring your negotiating skills smuck and dragging his kids out of the best private school in the country.
Let The Good Times Roll
And hey, remember it's just a game. Fantasy football can be fun for everyone, beginners and pros alike. It's not about the money, it's about crushing your closest friends. Oh yea, and the fantasy football grand prize winner money helps to.

The Fédération Internationale de Football Association, also known as FIFA, is the worlwide association of (football)soccer. It is one of the largest sports groups on Earth. The current headquarters for the association is based in Zürich, Switzerland. As the popularity of soccer continued to increase during the 20th century, it became apparent that a governing body for the sport needed to be formed. Though the Football Association had proposed an international organization many times, they were unsuccessful.
FIFA was formed when seven European countries decided to work together to form the association. The organization was founded on May 21, 1904 in Paris. The first worldwide competition was held in 1906, and it was met with little success. The founding president Robert Guérin chose to resign, and was replaced by Daniel Burley Woolfall. The next competition was held at the 1908 Olympics in London, and was much more successful. Within the next year, membership in the organization extended beyond Europe, and included the United States, South Africa, and Argentina.
The rising prominence of FIFA was slowed at the start of World War 1. Many players were sent to war, and international travel was heavily restricted. After World War 1 ended, the popularity continued to increase, and the first World Cup was held in 1930. This tournament was highly successful, and plans were made for more games. The World Cup has become one of the most important tournaments for soccer, and is the equivalent of the Super Bowl. The FIFA 2006 World Cup will be held in Germany.
FIFA has become a world renown organization The revenues brought in by the association between 2003 and 2006 are in the hundreds of millions of dollars. The success of the organization has also extended into the video game market, with the release of FIFA 2006 by Electronic Arts. This game is planned to be released in October. The FIFA series of games are widely popular among those who enjoy soccer, and a number of titles have been published over the last ten years. There are also a number of websites about FIFA, which includes fifasite.com.
There are a number of awards which have come to be associated with the organization. The FIFA World Player of the Year award is the highest honor to be given to a player. This award is a part of the annual ceremony. A "Match of the Century" was held in 2004 between Brazil and France. A list has been compiled by the organizaiton which is called the FIFA 100, and is a list of the greatest soccer players who have ever lived. Today FIFA is split into six global confederations.
The laws which govern soccer are not made by FIFA, but are instead given by an organization called the International Football Association Board. Fifty percent of the board members are also members of FIFA. A large percentage of the board is also from the United Kingdom, and this is because of the contributions made to the sport by Britain. Though the association had humble beginnings, it has today grown into a respectable organization which has a global appeal.

Watching Live Football Online
By: Konrad Braun
According to a recent poll online, the most popular sports to watch in the United States are (in order from the most to the least popular) pro football, baseball, college football, auto racing, pro basketball, college basketball, and lastly pro hockey and golf tied. With football being in such large demand in both first place with pro football and third place with college football its not really a wonder as to why there are so many places online where you can catch your favorite game! So far I haven't found many of these sites as being free. There is however one in particular that charges a very low fee, probably one of the cheaper sites online.
This site doesn't just offer live streams for football though, they offer a whole lot more. And as far as I can tell the streams are extremely high quality, which is exactly what you would want if you couldn't watch your games on the tube and had to watch them online.
I know what your thinking though, why would I watch football online when I could watch it on tv? I remember one instance in particular during a championship game when my team was playing, and the cable went out ALL the sudden because of a really bad snow storm we were having in the east coast. It was absolutely frustrating beyond explanation.
I would have done almost anything to see what in the world was going on with my favorite team! This is a great example as to why you would need a service like this. How about being stuck at the office with out a tv? Or maybe the game your wanting to watch isint broadcasted in your country at all! In these cases (and Im sure many other cases) this would be the perfect reason to watch your favorite football games online.
The live football sites I have found which are free excite me in knowing I wouldn't have to pay but they also make me wonder why they are free in the first place. How good is the quality? Is there going to be advertisements spattered all over the web page slowing down the feed?
These are the things your going to have to check out and see for yourself. Just make sure any of the sites your looking at always mention its LIVE. Sometimes people play word games, and they could just as well be pre-recorded games. Always ask questions before paying. Good luck with your Live Football search and GO TEAM!

FOOTBALLPURE PART III

Outside the USA, the game of soccer is regarded as the most popular sport in the world. Many of the best teams and soccer players top draw enormous admiration of millions of fans and boast huge multi-million dollar salaries.
The rules of the game: soccer is very simple to understand. Each team can field eleven players at any given time and they can make substitutions at any time in a match. The number of changes depends on the league, but in the current era three substitutions is the accepted norm in the league.
A game of soccer for a period of two distinct periods, each lasting forty-five minutes. The time between periods is called a half-time and lasted about ten minutes.
Each team defends a half of the arrivals to prevent the opposing team to score a goal in the net at the end of the arrivals. soccer Coaches have developed different methods to create ways to improve the offensive and defensive tactics of the game.
Typically modern teams defend the goal in using four defenders and a player who protects the goal, known as the goalkeeper. Offensivement, the coach to select four players in midfield and two strikers to create and score goals.
With the exception of goalkeeper, players can not handle the ball. Instead, good game is developed by passing the ball different ways to try to violate the opponent 's defence. But a low score in the game of professional soccer with most games decided by only one or two goals.
There are a lot of the terminology used during a game of soccer which is very specific. For the casual viewer this confusion may appear. The most important factor to consider is the discipline. The game is mediated by an arbitrator on the ground and two other officials known as the linesman on each side of the field.
If a player tries to take the ball from an opponent, but lacks the place and makes contact with the player, the referee sees this as a mistake and stop the game and award a kick the team blocked. At burden on the seriousness of the misconduct, the referee may issue the player with either a yellow or red card.
A yellow card indicates that the player may be issued a red card later in the game. The red card means that the player must leave the game immediately. In these circumstances, they are not allowed to return for the remainder of the game.
Introduction To Soccer

On each side of the defence field protects the lens. Directly in front of the goal is a rectangular area. If the arbitrator finds that misconduct has occurred in this area by a member of the defence, a penalty is given. When that happens, a member of the offence is given an opportunity to score a goal against the opposition without goalkeeper defence in a position to help.
Finally, perhaps the most confusing law is the rule offside. At its simplest interpretation, an offensive player can not be ahead of the defence that the play develops. This is seen as trying to get an unfair advantage and if seen by one of the referees will result in a free kick for the defence.
This rule is responsible for many of the debates and controversies surrounding the game of soccer. The arbitrator 'interpretation may decide ultimately who wins a match. At present, despite calls to introduce video technology to assist officials did nothing next summer.

More Practice For Soccer
By: John Salmon
As an athlete and sports buff most of my life that I get sick of hearing people to a point outstanding athlete and say: "He has the genetic" or "He was born to play like that" . Really, to OJ Simpson who has suffered from being bowlegged because of deficiencies in vitamin is born to be one of the best running backs in American football?
The truth is that the only thing that makes every great athlete a great athlete is practical. Soccer is no different; greatest Pele, Ronaldo and Beckham all have this in common. They practiced constantly to the point of exhaustion and beyond. It is a practice that gives you both the competence and confidence to be able to make the passes and shots that make a difference in a match. If you want to be a great soccer player then you must commit to daily practice from now.
The aspect of being in excellent physical condition is another crucial element of soccer with aerobic conditioning to be the vanguard. If you are tired and can not be run at your peak for an entire game, then you need a better packaging. Soccer practice focuses on developing your skills and technology. Your competence is identified as your ability to execute techniques that are taught as a trap, throw or kick. It is a regimented and consistent practice that a player is able to develop skills and confidence to play at a higher level.
Always have a plan to achieve the goals you want to meet before starting your practice sessions. Having an exact format and plan your time to stop wasting time and not knowing what to do next. Have objectives to be achieved, once you reach all the highest. It is better to have a friend or someone who shares your zeal for the sport to practice with you, especially when you try to improve your technique of kicking. If you are unable to find someone to practice with you focus kicking a specific area of the ball and make it where you want. You can also hit the ball in a particular place on a wall if you do not have a buddy to kick.
Another important aspect of soccer is control. A good way to practice ball is put in place cones and zigzag through the dribble the ball and try not to stop or even slow down. This exercise will help you when it comes to having to dribble a soccer pitch in a real game where you dodge other players.
As with any sport, you can also learn a lot by watching other players closely. If you have a preferred position, watching a game and focus on this player and learn how he executes his technique. Follow these tips and you'll be well on your way to become a great soccer player.

Since the Beatles completed their 292 show residency artists such as The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Who and recently the Arctic Monkeys have gone on to play at The Cavern defining the club as a hot-spot for emerging talent and an icon in world music.
The Cavern Club is situated along the lively Mathew Street just off the city centre and is open daily from 12pm holding live music nights and DJ events playing anything from Mersey Beat to Brit Pop.

Turning The Place Over
Described as the most daring piece of public art in the world, Richard Wilson’s revolving slice of condemned office block is a sight to be seen. Set just outside the city centre in Moorfields and only viewable during daylight hours Wilson has cut out a huge 8-metre oval from a building’s façade allowing it to rotate in its place exposing glimpses of the inside to passers by.
China Town
Liverpool has one of the largest and most established Chinese communities in Europe. The Imperial Arch on Berry Street acts as a gateway to an area revitalized with the Capital of Culture award. Thursday, Friday and Saturday are the main nights but be sure to book early as tickets are usually sold-out on the door.
